[00:00:02] Welcome to the Chroma Charge podcast. [00:00:10] Good afternoon, friends. You all right? [00:00:13] You good? [00:00:17] We're starting a series of teaching today on the Ten Commandments. We've actually been sort of getting ready to do this in the last few weeks, but I just before we start, I want to pray. [00:00:31] I know the Lord is with us, and we've already been worshiping and praying, but I want to pray over this word, Lord, I thank you so much, Lord, that your word is true. [00:00:44] I thank you, Lord, that you have given your word as a blueprint for life. [00:00:50] Lord, I ask this afternoon that you would anoint me to bring the word of the Lord of your commands of scripture. And, Lord, that it would go deep within our hearts, Lord, that we would be receptive to your word, that there would be an anointing on me and an anointing on us to receive your word afresh. And the people said so. In the last two weeks, Steve has been talking about temptation and then confession, and a little while before that, I talked about consecration and a passage of scripture that comes just before this word of the Lord, the Ten Commandments, where the people are consecrated before the Lord ready to hear this word. [00:01:40] You know, we've heard it said over the last few weeks in this teaching in preparation for this, that we have an enemy, that he is against us, that he is prowling around like a roaring lion trying to take us out. [00:01:54] And we have heard that we have a flesh, an old life that is actually dead because we have a new life in Jesus. But sometimes through our choices, decisions, our partnering with a lie of the enemy, we invite that old man, the flesh, to crawl up off the altar and we end up in temptation and sin, which is what we talked about last week. But we are so thankful that we have the cross of Jesus Christ and we can confess our sin and he is faithful and just and will forgive us from all unrighteousness. You know, it's a wonderful thing to confess our sin and be forgiven. [00:02:35] But the thing is, and this is where we're moving into now, as we look at the laws of God, the ways of God, that we have this new life, that we're not meant to live in our old life. You see, Jesus wants us to live his life to the full. He said, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. You're no longer a slave to sin. [00:02:59] So as we move into this next part, we want to walk away from sin and live this brand new life. [00:03:07] You know, the law of God in the old covenant is explained in Hebrews 8 as obsolete. [00:03:17] But it is only obsolete in that it is no longer written on these tablet stones. It is now written into the very hearts of God's people by the Holy Spirit. [00:03:30] And it is written through our devotion and our love for Jesus. [00:03:36] And it's what Jesus meant. And I talked about this when I talked about consecration. It's what he meant when he said, all of the law is summed up in this. Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. And then the second commandment after the first is to love our neighbour as ourself. And all of this and what it means for our daily lives is about loving and adore, adoring him with every part of who we are. [00:04:06] Jesus said he had not come to abolish the law. We said this last week, not a jot or a tittle. It says in the new King James in Matthew 5, not a jot or a tittle, not a single word of the law had he come to abolish. Why? Because it's written on our hearts. Because those who love him do what he says as an instinct. [00:04:32] Jesus said over and over again in the Gospel of John, we read John 14, if you love me, you will obey my commands. He says it, I think three, three, maybe more than three times. If you love me, you'll do what I say. [00:04:48] And he also says, if you don't keep my commands, you don't love me. Maybe not the exact words, but he actually does say that we do not love him with our whole heart if we don't do what he says. And if we don't do what he says, we get to come to the altar again and receive forgiveness and walk again in that brand new life. [00:05:11] And what we want is to have more times, more days where we walk free from sin than that moment where we trip up and have to confess. We are free from sin because of the blood of Jesus, make no mistake. [00:05:27] But he also wants us to live actually free from sin, this brand new life. [00:05:34] And as we read the law, we can fall in love with him all over again as we see the greatness and the goodness of who he is and the beauty of how he wants us to live. [00:05:48] We can learn to love him, grow to love him even more as we see who he is in the Scriptures and we can walk free from sin. [00:05:58] And more than that, even more than that, we can therefore become a beacon of light in the world that we're living in, shining, literally shining brightly for Him. [00:06:10] You see, the Law wasn't a set of commands that we just have to follow. The law was about being the covenant people of God, the beloved, the ones who he adores. And we are in love with him and we shine in the world as distinctively his. That's the whole point, what it means to be in relationship with Yahweh. So will you stand? [00:06:35] And we're going to read from Exodus 20, and we're going to read the first great commandment. [00:06:46] And God spoke all these words saying, now, you know, when God spoke these words, he spoke them from the top of the mountain. There was fire and smoke and just this beautiful display of glory. And the people were actually a little bit scared. [00:07:02] So much so that later on they asked that Moses would bring the word of the Lord because they were a bit scared to receive it directly from him. But here he gives it directly to them. And just for us to know that is the heart of God, that we would hear the word of the Lord from him. It's always what he wanted, this relationship. [00:07:21] And he. And he said this. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. Will you take a seat? [00:07:36] Today is Yahweh day. I love that we sang so much about the greatness of God and the victory of God in our worship this morning. They didn't know that I was going to talk about Yahweh, but it always sometimes just all fits together together as the Holy Spirit leads us. The first and great, great commandment. Name above all names, Yahweh. There is no other. [00:08:02] And this first great command is written into our hearts. And it's a statement of truth. It's a description of his character, his goodness, his nature, and the first instruction about how God's people live in relationship with him and relationship with the world. And we will all know if we've been Christians for a little while, that I am is the Hebrew word is in the Hebrew is Yahweh. We will, many of us will know that. But if you're a new Christian here today, if you've only been a Christian for a short while, that would be new to you. That in the Hebrew, this is Yahweh, the name that describes him as the Lord. I am Yahweh. I am the Lord. Name above all names. He. It's synonymous with his rescue. It's synonymous with his redemption. It tells the story of his victory. God speaks from the mountain for all to hear. He is revealing himself to his covenant People. [00:09:03] But Moses, who with Aaron was up the mountain receiving this word from the Lord so that he could then go on to recount it in all of the law that follows, had already heard this name. He'd already heard a new Yahweh name above all names. Do you remember Exodus 3? The burning bush where the Lord first reveals himself to Moses and he has to take off his sandals because it's holy ground. [00:09:33] And Moses actually asks him what his name is, and he says, I am. [00:09:39] The statement that we hear here later on in this covenant with the people of God, I am echoing through all of the Scriptures, all of the story of God's redeeming love. There is no other Name. And one of the beautiful things that we see in that first story in Exodus 3 of the Name I am Yahweh is that when God says he is Lord of all, so beautiful, he always backs it up with the story of his redeeming love, his authority, his power, his. His rescue, his victory always follows his name. He tells Moses, I am the God of your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The story of his redemption. He tells him that when Moses will go to Pharaoh, that there will be a demonstration of the Lord's power. I am Name above all names. And I back it up with my authority, and there will be victory on the back of my name. It's all bound together. [00:10:42] He says, I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders, which I will do in the midst. And after that, he will let you go. And this is the story where the sea is parted and the Israelites are rescued from their slavery. So when he says this to the Israelites, it's already done. He's expressing what he's already done, explaining who he is in the context of them. And his victory is already obvious for everybody to see. See, it's a description of who he is, a description of what he's like. [00:11:15] The name Yahweh, the Lord reveals his goodness, his kindness, and his redemption. It always, always tells the story of his love. [00:11:26] And the climax of that story that we all know is told in the New Testament. It's the story of Jesus. [00:11:34] When Jesus was asked who he was and he said, I am, they all knew what he meant, that he was, I am Yahweh, the one who rescues the one who redeems the name above all names. And of course, just as they lived in the fulfillment of that promise, we live in the fulfillment of that promise, because Jesus has rescued us and we have been redeemed. [00:12:02] I am The Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. If the Son sets you free, this is how we understand it. If the sun sets you free, you will be free indeed. No longer a slave to sin. [00:12:17] It was for them. It is for all time. And it is for us who are the covenant people of God. [00:12:24] He is the Lord, and therefore he says, you shall have no other gods before me. This is the therefore. [00:12:31] We are to live in a posture of adoration and devotion to Yahweh. We are to live with a constant sort of gaze on the Name above all names. It's a posture of the heart. It's a daily devotion. It isn't just the worship that we bring on Sunday. The worship that we bring on Sunday is an overflow into every single day of the week. Yahweh, the name above all names, is on the tip of our tongue as God's people. When we wake, when we work, when we rest, when we lie down, we are saying, lord, you are the name above all names. That's what it means. It's a way of living in covenant relationship with him. [00:13:17] It's our worship. It's the posture of our hearts and devotion. But it's also, friends, a war weapon of warfare. [00:13:25] You know, we all have what I would describe as Moses, Pharaoh moments in life, don't we? You know, that thing that happens where, you know, this is not a. This doesn't feel like a physical thing. It feels like a spiritual battle. I see it as a spiritual battle. And this is when we call upon the name of Yahweh because he is victorious. He is the strong deliverer. He is name above all names. [00:13:57] You know, in this church, some of you may know, some of you may not know, but we have a little bit of a tricky relationship with our landlord. [00:14:06] And we've been sort of in a lease with this building for quite a long time. It's the reason we're looking for another building. But there was a kind of long story and dialogue of, you know, one of the things on the. On the lease is that we get first refusal to buy. And so when our lease was up, we went to him and said, will you sell this building to us? And he said, yes. And then he said no. [00:14:26] He said yes. And then he said no. A number of times. He said yes. And we were like, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then he said, no. And it was just like the story of, you know, Moses going to Pharaoh and saying, let the people go. And he said, yes. No, yes, no. Yes, no. [00:14:41] And there was all the plagues and, you know, all the warfare in the midst of it. [00:14:47] And, you know, one of the things that the Lord has. [00:14:51] I've really felt impressed upon my heart is that when I get out of the car, in the car park, I'm to stand as often as I remember, feel prompted or whatever. You know, sometimes I'm running in because I'm late for a meeting. But that moment where I just have the time and I just stand and I say. I lift my hands up and I say, yahweh, you are the Lord. You are the Lord of this house. You are the Lord of this building. [00:15:16] Every other God is an idol, because I know they have idols. [00:15:21] And I declare, name above all names. This is your house. You will have the victory one way or another. And I just pray. I just pray. It's warfare. And, you know, this is how we are to live. [00:15:34] We are to see beyond the realities of sometimes the physical thing that we're facing to the spiritual thing that we are in warfare over, and pray. Declaring name above all names. It's when our kids, you know, start down that path, and we feel like, you know, you're walking away from the Lord, getting into a bad crowd, and we feel like stuff's happening that we shouldn't be happening. And we'd get into their bedroom, maybe when they're there, but often when they're not, and we're in their bedroom and we're just praying in their bedroom. You are the Lord of my child. You are the Lord of their life. You are the name above all names. You are the victorious one. You are the great redeemer. And we declare, declare his name above all names. It's that time in our lives where we need a miracle. You are the Lord. It's that time in our lives where we're going into a board meeting and we know there's a bully and they're gonna, you know, be bullies. And we just go in before and just secretly sort of get there a little bit before. And we walk round every chair and walk round the board table, and we're like, you are the name above all names. You know, we don't have to be deliberately weird, but we can be a little. [00:16:47] I mean, I think the guys in the car park look at me like, what is she doing? [00:16:53] I do it so often, they just kind of stare at me, but I'm like, yahweh. [00:16:59] That's how we live. [00:17:00] This is the posture of our hearts. [00:17:04] Every other God is an Idol. [00:17:08] Just like God's chosen, people were surrounded by other nations who worshiped multiple gods. [00:17:16] So are we. [00:17:17] But here's the point. There are no contenders with Yahweh. He is the Lord. It's not big God and little gods. It's every other God is an idol. [00:17:27] This is the second commandment. And we're going to talk about that next week in more detail. [00:17:32] But I do just want to say this. If we've come to Christ, we get rid of idols. We get rid of false gods. We get rid of books, images, ritualistic figures or possessions. When we come to Jesus, we renounce all association with those things. Now, listen, this can be hard if we've grown up hearing that we will only be blessed if we pray to this idol or that idol. [00:17:56] But listen, friends, there is only one, and his name is Yahweh. And we don't want to partner with what's behind these idols, which is demons. [00:18:09] Every other God is an idol. [00:18:12] There is only one name above all names. And the point is here. He is the one who has rescued us. He is the only one who can save. [00:18:23] He is the only one to whom we pray. Name above all names. We know it and we say it. And it's that moment when we're in a conversation with someone and they say, all paths lead to God. Don't you think. How many times have I been in that conversation? I sometimes go to a beautician. Obviously very rarely. [00:18:42] I'd love to go a little bit more. But you know, this lovely lady, and she worships idols, and she worships idols. And she always wants to tell me about her prayer life because she knows I'm a Christian. And she prays and brings offerings, and it's like she wants some assurance. She often says to me, well, and I do this and I do that. And then she says, and I believe all paths lead to God. Don't you? [00:19:07] And I'm like, no, sorry, I don't. I don't need to be mean or obnoxious or ram it down her throat. I just say, no. [00:19:14] I'm a Christian, and I believe there's only one pathway to heaven, and that's Jesus. We say it. We can say it nicely, but we say it. [00:19:25] Number two. [00:19:26] There is only one who can save. [00:19:29] There is only one who has saved us. And I bow down before my king. [00:19:35] This is a picture of grateful surrender, worship, devotion to my king there and here. And now for us, a royal picture at the beginning of the story that our Lord Jesus made a way for us to fully understand. [00:19:54] Because our Lord Jesus, as we know Philippians 2, humbled himself, became a servant, obedient even to death, death on the cross, and then was raised, seated at the right hand of the Father, that every knee should bow. [00:20:13] And we know how to do it because he did it. So we bow down to him. We live a life of being bowed down. [00:20:22] And, you know, this isn't that. You know, words like surrender, submission, obedience, bowing down. They're not very popular in the 21st century, are they? But that is the picture here, that we live a surrendered life. And, you know, we know it because we pray it. The first time we pray to Jesus, the first time we give our lives to Jesus. And we bow down and we say, lord, I make you Lord of my life. [00:20:49] But sometimes the hard part is actually living that way every single day for the rest of our lives to live in this constant surrender to the lordship of Jesus. And what that means is that the decisions I make and the things that I do are always bowed down to Him. [00:21:06] It means that I am not bowed down to what other people are doing, what the crowd are doing, what the crowd is saying. I'm not bowed down to money or sex or power. I'm bowed down to the lordship of Jesus. [00:21:22] And it comes out in so many different ways in our lives. But I just wanted to tell you this one story, because the honest truth is being bowed down to the Lord Jesus is actually about the everyday, ordinary things and decisions that we make. [00:21:35] You know, when my kids were younger, we used to have movie night. I know many of you will have movie night. And movie night got harder and harder as they got older, because it's like, how do you find a film that everybody likes? There's four years between my kids, boy and girl. So there's the normal arguments about the film that everybody likes. And then you want it to be clean, right? You want it to be a nice film. And so it's tricky. And so often Steve and I used to go back to the films that we watched as teenagers that were, like, in the 80s, that were pretty, you know, silly, nice films. But listen, you know, we'd always forget that one scene. [00:22:16] There was always one scene because it was the 80s. And we'd forget. We'd put the film on, and then that woman gets out of the water in not so much like, a little tiny bikini. And I'm like, steve, find the remote control. [00:22:31] Joel, cover your eyes. Cover your eyes. He'd be on his, like, whatever, his little device, and he'd look up and suddenly see the woman jiggling all over the place. And then he's like. He'd be like this. And then I'd be, steve, you cover your eyes too. And then he'd be like, find the remote control or cover my eyes. And then I'd want to make it fair. And I'd say, emma, you cover your eyes. And she's like, why do I have to cover my. I don't care about the woman jiggling about on the telly anyway. This would go on for a long time while we're trying to find the remote control. [00:23:01] And eventually we'd find it and the scene was all over and it was all done. And we're like, what was that all about? My kids sometimes talk about that. This funny moment at home, a memory of being bowed down to Jesus because if you look at a woman lustfully, you've already committed adultery in your heart. [00:23:22] The ways of Jesus written into our hearts. And we live this surrendered life. We know his word and it affects every decision we make. [00:23:32] A bowed down life to Jesus. [00:23:37] He is the Lord and He is the only one who can save us. And we live bowed down. [00:23:44] And the last thing I want to say to you is, therefore we are exclusively and distinctively his in this world. [00:23:54] We are the holy and set apart people of God. And this is the point of the law. It's not just do this, do that. It's about what does it mean to be his and shine amongst all of the other nations, amongst all the surrounding people as those who belong to Yahweh. [00:24:19] You know, as I was thinking about this, I kept remembering there's like an annoying little song that it kind of goes, this Little Light of Mine. I'm not going to sing it because it's, you know, a very high pitched song. This little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. It's like really annoying, but it was just going round in my head when I was preparing this. What does it mean to be the distinctive people of God? To be exclusively his and distinctive in the world? That's what this word was about. And that's what this word written into our hearts is about. It turns into, into something that displays God for all to see. Jesus said it this way, you are the salt. Don't stop being salty. You are the light. And the light should not be hidden. We understand this to be the distinctive, that salt, that food without salt is tasteless, that if there's no light, it's just Dark. But when there's light, there can be no darkness. [00:25:23] You know, this distinctiveness in us is what it means for God's people to go higher. [00:25:32] And it kind of stuns people when it happens. You sometimes see people kind of bolt. [00:25:39] I was in the dentist the other week and something weird happened in the dentist. My dentist is about the same age as me. He's a family man. He'd been doing all the normal things, you know, say art and all of that. And the nurse left and then he just suddenly turned around, said, turned around, really weird. And he just said, so what are you doing tonight? Anything nice? [00:26:02] I was like, okay, I'm not going to overthink this. But without even thinking, I just looked him straight in the eyes and I said, I'm going to church. [00:26:10] I said, I've got a prayer meeting tonight. It's Tuesday night. We always have a prayer meeting at church. I love it. And he went. He literally kind of like took a step back. It wasn't what he expected. I don't know what he was doing or what he was saying. I'm not going to overthink it. But I know he stunned when I said, I'm going to a prayer meeting, matey. [00:26:29] It's like it shocks people, doesn't it? It stuns people when we say what's not expected because we live a higher life. We are seated in heavenly realms and it just comes out of us. [00:26:46] Now listen, there's something I want to say and I'm going to read it because I've really considered what this is that I felt on my heart as I've studied this word. [00:26:58] Because so often, you know, a prophetic word. We often think of prophetic words as being spontaneous, don't we? But actually often prophetic words are studying the Scriptures and feeling the heart of God for the now situations that we face. And so I have written this down carefully as I've kind of stewarded it before the Lord. And I just want to read it to you just to say this. [00:27:27] There's a lot of religious and political noise at the moment. [00:27:31] There are some very, very good things that are being said. [00:27:35] There are many, many arguments being aired on TV and social media. [00:27:41] How are the set apart people of God behave? [00:27:46] I see many people taking their agenda, political or otherwise, applying that to the scriptures to say this is what God thinks. [00:27:56] The outcome of that is that if you don't agree with me, you are not agreeing with him. [00:28:01] The outcome of that is division and anger and Christian leaders promoting their views and canceling Other leaders who don't agree with them. [00:28:13] Friends, that is not Jesus. [00:28:17] We must be oh so careful that we do not take our agenda, our political view, our experience, or even our pain and make the Bible say what we want it to say. [00:28:32] God does not agree with us, we agree with him. [00:28:37] You know Paul Manwaring the other week when he was speaking about a Christ centered life, he said this and I wrote it down. He said the battle of all of life is, is it God centric or man centric? [00:28:49] You see sometimes the idol is me, myself and I. [00:28:54] And the Lord really highlighted this to me and began to speak to me about it. The other week when I was in a prophecy class and we were doing a little prophetic activation and my daughter had prepared three tables with people on these tables that the people who were prophesying didn't know who they were because they were covered. One was a person, one was a couple and one was a people group. And in all of those people I had a view about what I thought and I kind of thought God agreed with me. And as I heard these prophetic words where they couldn't see them and I heard the heart of God and I felt the Holy Spirit, I suddenly realized, oh God, you don't agree with me about what I think about these people. [00:29:38] And it was just a moment before the Lord of recognizing your ways are not my ways. And I need to get my head to agree with what you're thinking, not to get you to agree with me. [00:29:51] There is a pressure on leaders to accept a view, the view, people's views, and then preach it from the pulpit. I believe the job of the leaders of the church is to teach good God's word and to be good shepherds of the sheep. [00:30:06] I am not against church leaders saying what they think if they have thought about it and they really know what they think. [00:30:13] But if it is going with this thought or that thought, they are just being tossed about by the wind. [00:30:19] Many leaders don't know what to think. [00:30:23] Many have a view, but they don't want to say that their view is God's view. [00:30:29] But I will say this. [00:30:31] I have seen a lot of views and Christians on social media literally beating each other up and shouting each other down if they dare say what they think or disagree. [00:30:42] Why? [00:30:44] Because we think God's view is our view. [00:30:47] Labour, Conservative, Reform, Liberal Democrat. Gosh, I'm not very good at politics but I have written it down. [00:30:56] Those of us who believe God is for certain leaders, I want to humbly say to you that God is neither for or against. [00:31:05] As God's people, God is for us. He is our defender. But he does not serve the agenda or desire or view of any man or woman. Why? [00:31:17] Because he is Yahweh, the name above all names. [00:31:22] And there is a great picture of this in Joshua 5, where the Lord has instructed his people and Joshua to go in and take a land, and there's going to be a battle. [00:31:32] And he comes to him as the commander of the angel armies and appears before Joshua. And Joshua asks, are you for or against us? And you would think, and I would think that Joshua would think that he would say, I'm for you, Joshua, because he was being guided by the Lord. But he says, neither. [00:31:51] I have just come. [00:31:54] What's the point? [00:31:56] God does not worship a man. Man has to worship him. God does not have the mind of a man, but we can have the mind of Christ and we can take hold of the way he thinks. But friends, it is far, far above and higher what a man wants and thinks. [00:32:14] In all of this noise, I believe the Lord would ask us, what does it look like to love one another? [00:32:21] What does it look like to honor one another? [00:32:26] I had a dream the other week about a young woman who's been a student here. [00:32:30] And she's an amazing young woman who was a student. Then she went on. Did our encounter year. Then she went to work and she. She was serving as a leader here. Amazing young woman. We're so proud of her. She's gone over to Manchester now and she's doing her ma. Great loss. We love her, but also we know that she's going to be shining as a beacon of light over there. And I had this dream about her this week. And in the dream, she was on a plane going somewhere, and she looked so beautiful, but she was surrounded. [00:33:03] She was in first class and she was surrounded by, you know, drinks and tea and lovely things and cakes. And she had it all sort of mapped out. And I thought, well, maybe this is about an upgrade for her. And afterwards I prayed, and as I was preparing this, the Lord said, no, this is me. [00:33:21] This generation is the revival generation. And they are called to go higher. [00:33:28] He is the name above all names. [00:33:34] And I thank God that in these days he is moving in our land. And I, for one, want to stay focused and fixed on Yahweh. [00:33:44] He is the only one we worship. [00:33:48] The word of the Lord. [00:33:50] The word of the Lord to the people is, I am the Lord. You shall have no other gods. I am the only one who can Save you. And we are to be exclaimed exclusively and distinctively. His shining as a beacon of light in the world in which we live. Will you stand? I want to read to you. [00:34:12] I want to read over you. [00:34:15] Oh, no. [00:34:17] Have I lost it? No. There we go. Got it. Just as we close. I want to read this over you as a declaration over this house, over your lives, and over your families. This is Deuteronomy 6. [00:34:30] You know the word of the Lord, the word that was repeated over and over again to God's people was, sometimes they did it and sometimes they didn't. But there was a new generation that would come who would hear the word of the Lord again and go into the promised land, a revival generation. And as Moses prepares them, he recounts the law and the beginning of the law in this way. And I just want you to receive, receive this into your heart and as a declaration over your house and your life. [00:34:59] This is Deuteronomy 6. 4. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. [00:35:15] You shall teach them diligently to your children. You shall talk of them all when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. [00:35:32] You shall write them on the doorpost of your house and on your gates. [00:35:37] And the people said, amen. Amen. [00:35:42] Thanks for listening to the Chroma Charge podcast. If you enjoy if you enjoyed this message, you can like and subscribe.
