[00:00:02] Speaker A: Welcome to the Crema Church podcast.
[00:00:09] Speaker B: Thank you. You can grab a seat.
Well, good morning.
Welcome again to church. The barbers, Stephen Juliet send their love. They are out in Colombia in revival land, although I always say Leicester's revival land as well. Amen.
They've gone to visit a church called Aviva Miento, who are In, I think 35 years of revival now, which is just incredible. And so, yeah, they send their love. They're on their way back very soon and I'm sure they'll have fire with them that they're going to release to us. So we're excited for that. But this morning I want to speak about the sword of the Spirit. I actually felt the Lord put this on my heart. I was away last week sitting in the sun, not that you can tell at all. I'm still very pasty white, although my children are like beautifully golden brown because they're obviously half Indian. So they run off into the sun and I'm there like slapping the 50 sun cream on and I look exactly the same. But it was a great week. But I felt like the Lord, just out of the blue, just so randomly gave me this picture of a beautiful young girl on our encounter year. And she, it was like she picked up this heavy silver sword and in her eyes it looked like, I'm here to do battle. And she lifted this sword up and, and not only was it this, you know, beautiful, powerful sword, but it, then she put it to her lips and I felt the Holy Spirit say, it's time to pick up the word of God.
And I thought, oh, this is, you know, just for the encounter years and I'll do some stuff with them. But then the Lord said, no, this is for the church, my church are to learn to pick up the Word as a weapon. And so I just feel really excited this morning just to go on this journey together and go, well, what does that actually look like? What does it mean for us to, to use the word of God as the sword of the spirit? And of course I went straight, my mind went straight to Hebrews 4:12, which says, for the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than a double edged sword.
This word is alive.
It's not like any other book, you know. The first thing I want to say just to lay some foundations this morning is that this book is about an encounter with Jesus.
We are to encounter him. We're invited to encounter him as we read the words on the page.
One of the best bits of my role here is that I get to hear all the time about the stories of new believers when they come and give their life to Jesus, but then on from there, you know, what happens in their life, how are their lives transformed? And we get to hear about new life and what they do at the course there on a Tuesday evening.
And one of the girls who recently gave her life to Jesus, she went along and like most people, kind of that you learn lots of new things about the text, the knowledge and didn't know that was in the Bible and this and that. But she went in with a belief that, yes, I've given my life to God, but he's quite angry at me. You know, he's angry at the world, he's angry at me.
Just maybe those kind of thoughts that God is not in a good mood, which God is in a good mood, just to say, just to announce. But she went along and so they said, why don't you start to read the New Testament and the stories of Jesus? Which she did. And she fell in love with the Word. Then she started putting it in her car so she'd listen to it on Audible, on Audio or whatever it's called. And as she encountered the Lord there, she came to new life. And the team just told me, she said this statement, she said this. I'm slowly getting used to being loved.
How beautiful is that? I'm slowly getting used to being loved. And we love the stories where they learn new things, factual things about Jesus and this happened and that happened. But.
But to encounter the Lord through his Word is the whole point that she met Jesus and she was learning to be engulfed in his love. It's just beautiful. And that's what happens when we read the Word, we encounter the author.
The Bible is different to any other book that has ever been or will ever be in that regard.
It is alive.
You know, the only book, it's the only book that is alive when I read a book about this is a random person. But like Florence Nightingale, Gal, let's say. I don't know why she came to mind, but if I read a book about her, I would get to know about her. You know, I might read some stories about her, like find out some facts. I might even read about the mission that she was on. I might get to know her perspectives or her character. I might even pick up some good advice, maybe some good wisdom. But I never meet her while I read it. I never sit across from her and have a conversation. You know, I never see the facial expression expressions that she has or her eyes filling with tears. I never Actually have a conversation with her. I mean, that seems obvious, right? But I never encounter her. I just read a book about her. But the Bible isn't like that. The Bible is his living breathing word, Jesus, the manna that became man. The daily bread that we get to encounter as we read it, as we read the words on the page. See, as believers, our sin has been washed clean. Thank you, Jesus. His Holy Spirit fills us. And then the Holy Spirit, you know, his favorite topic to talk about is Jesus. He loves to talk about Jesus. He loves to reveal Jesus to us. And then as he reveals Jesus in his Word, Jesus says, I've come to reveal the Father. So we get to know the Father. And the Father says, you know, I've sent my Son Spirit so that you would know me. And then the Spirit talks about Jesus. So we get to be invited into this beautiful conversation, this relationship with God, with the Godhead. As we read His Word, we encounter the author. Make sense.
We literally the the words come off the page. We don't just hear about God, we encounter God. The religious leaders just didn't understand this. In John 5, we hear this kind of brutal statement that Jesus says to the leaders, they knew the Torah, they knew it inside out. But he says, you study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me. What he's saying is you've studied this Word all about me just to try and find out God. But I'm here.
I'm right in front of you. You've missed the point. You, you've just got knowledge, but I'm here. Hello. Like, come and find me. The point is that we wouldn't just walk away with our head filled, but a heart encounter with the living God.
There are people today who still read the words on the page, I believe, but without Holy Spirit, void of the Holy Spirit, they're just better equipped to have a debate, which is debatable because they haven't known the author. Anyway, the whole point is that we're not just equipped with knowledge, but we've encountered the living person of Jesus Christ, Word that dwells within us and transforms us. We encounter him as we read it.
You know, for those of us who believe, we have the beautiful Holy Spirit who reveals Jesus and it's from this foundation that we get to know him and we start to recognize his voice more and more.
I know in my own life, you know, many of my encounters with Jesus are familiar to me because I've already met him here. I've already met him in the Word when I've messed up. I've been short with the kids. Not that no one else would ever be short with their kids, gentle parenting and all of that. But maybe I've messed up or I've been a bit harsh with my husband or whatever it might be. And I feel that weight of guilt sometimes. And then I see the face of Jesus and I remember the moment that I read the story and I encountered him where he looked at the woman who was covered in sin and. And he said, who's going to throw the first stone? Do you remember that story?
And then he doesn't throw the stone, and he says, neither do I condemn you.
See, I've met Jesus there. I've met Him. I've heard his words, I've seen his face. I've encountered him there. And so when I experience a similar situation in my life, I go, I already know Jesus, what He would say, what he would do. And I encounter him again when I'm talking to students. Oh, my goodness. Just the things that are coming against our young people. And conversation after conversation about the freedom that they need from the thoughts that they're having and things like that. I've already lived in the teaching to take every thought captive.
I've already lived there with the Lord because I've been on my own journey with that.
I've camped in the training school of making those thoughts bow to the feet of Jesus Christ. I've lived there in his word. I've camped there because I've needed that for myself. And as I've received his freedom, I have an authority to take them there, too.
You can't lead people somewhere where you've never been. We must be here, live here, abide here, encounter him here, and then we know him in our daily lives. You know, when God asked me to do something that's hard or costly, so much of my time has been spent encountering Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. Now I remember reading those scriptures, and it was like I was walking with him in the garden. It was like I saw his forehead covered in sweat and blood. You know, he knows the cross is before him. And then he says to the Father, not my will, Yours be done.
I've met Jesus there, I've encountered him, and so I can go. Okay, I'll take up the cost as well. I'll pay the price. I'll surrender because you did, and I've met you there.
You know, we're not to over complicate this relationship with the Lord. It can be a bit complicated. Sometimes we can make it like, more distracting than it needs to be.
All we need to do is acknowledge that Holy Spirit lives in us, ask him to reveal Jesus. And as we read the Scriptures, we know Jesus. He becomes familiar to us and we recognize his voice. So that when someone gives you a prophetic word or he speaks to you, you can go, yeah, that sounds like Jesus. That sounds like him. Because I've lived here and I've encountered Him. Make sense? So we encounter the Lord through His Word.
Secondly, His Word transforms us. We're going to read a few bits of Scripture today, so you're going to get a workout. You're going to be up and down. Is that okay? So two Timothy, chapter three. You can stand for the Word of God.
I want to read this to you.
It says this two Timothy, chapter three.
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Amen. You can grab a seat if you'd like. The message says it in a beautiful way. Every part of Scripture is God breathed and is useful one way or another for showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, and training us to live in God's way so that we'll be shaped up for the tasks he has for us.
His Word. Not only do we encounter Jesus, but we're transformed by His Word. We actually can't have an encounter with Jesus without being somewhat transformed.
But in His Word it says that Paul is explaining to Timothy that we are shown truth.
Listen. Not our truth, his truth.
His truth is absolute. Our truth seems to change with culture. You know how we're feeling that day, with the weather, through the times. Our truth can change, but his truth never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore. And we can depend on this word as truth. You know phrases like, it just doesn't feel right for me.
They're fine. Like, feelings are incredible servants, but they're terrible masters.
They tell us how we're doing, but we shouldn't live our life by them. We live our lives on the rock of Jesus Christ. You know, I don't have a piece about it, so I'm not going to tithe.
It's not in line with the Word of God. I'm not going to put my actions where my feelings are. I'm going to put my actions in obedience with the Word of God.
We must live by His Word. I don't feel close to God. You know, these are real feelings, but I'm just saying that they fall flat on their face in the presence of the Word of God. Because this is true. He says that he will never leave me or forsake me. He says that nothing separates me from the love of God.
So actually, as I stand on that truth, I go. It doesn't matter how I feel. He is close to me. I'm going to start to acknowledge him. I'm going to praise him before I feel him. Because the truth is, he never leaves me. And we can stand on that.
The Word transforms us.
His Word exposes our rebellion. Have you ever felt like His Word actually reads you? You don't read it. His Word reads us. We feel, not condemnation. We shouldn't. That's from the enemy. But we do feel this conviction going, oh, the fruit of the spirit is patience. I probably need to be more abiding in the spirit. So that patience is the fruit.
Actually, it convicts us to say, he's got so much more for us.
Lord, you are higher. Would you take me there? And so the Word of God exposes our rebellion. He corrects our mistakes and says, go this way instead. His Word trains us and leads us.
I want to. Can I share just a proud parent moment? Because I never really share stories about my kids, do I?
That's sarcastic. I feel like I talk about them all the time. But there was a few weeks ago, I was sitting in the car with my son Elijah, and there'd been talk of a trip into the mosque. His class were going to visit the mosque. And I had some feelings about that, which were, don't go. But I wanted to ask him what he thought. So I just said, hey, buddy, we need to have a conversation about the trip that you're going on as a class. And he just said, mummy, please don't make me go. I just don't want to go. And I was like, okay. Like, why do you want to talk about that? And he said, oh, proudest moment. He was like, I've been reading the Ten Commandments, and the first one says that we shall have no other God but Jesus.
I was like, God, I'll just step out of the way and you can parent my children. Like, how amazing. Like, he's got the conviction and hear me, I'll probably get 100 emails like why that's wrong or whatever. I'm not going into the details of the mosque visit. I'm just saying that Elijah has encountered the living God through the Word and he has been convicted and the Lord has led him. The Lord has spoken to him and I'm going to encourage that and water that forevermore. Because if he knows the Lord, then nothing can go wrong. Well, we live in a. Yeah, there's lots of things that could go wrong, but his foot is not going to fall because he's going to come under the blessing of God as he trusts in the Word of God, so His Word encourages His Word, wraps us in love. His Word brings health. Okay, get this. Proverbs 4, 20.
It says this. Pay close attention to what I say. Listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight. Which means we're actually meant to read them. Keep them within your heart, for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. These words are health. And I don't know if you're sick in any way or you know someone who's sick, which is probably a lot of us in this room. That word health is literally medicine.
So as we read the words on this page, whether you understand them or you don't, as you read them with Holy Spirit, you are taking medicine from heaven.
You are receiving the glory glow. Do you know what? I'm reading this instead of a really expensive face cream for my wrinkles.
I'm like, I don't receive old age, I don't receive wrinkles. I'm receiving the medicine of heaven, which is the glory glow. And it's doing my bank account wonders. Joel's very happy.
I'm joking. I might need some top up cream too. But I'm just saying the Word of God is medicine to us.
This is transformational.
Why? Because it's not words on a page. It's not a book by your bedside table. It is alive and is active. And it is sharper than a double edged sword. And we encounter the living God through it. We encounter Jesus and then he transforms us.
We digest this word every day. We live here, we abide in it. We don't worship it. We worship Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Not Father, Son, Holy Bible, but we, we do carry His Word in our hearts and we live by it. Amen.
Okay, so lastly, thirdly, we are to conquer with this word. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. And Cromer Church. We are to pick it up and to speak it out as if we're in battle, because we are. I'm going to ask you to stand one more time, except for at the end, Ephesians chapter six. We're going to head there to the armor of God.
If you've grown up in Sunday school, you've definitely worn a helmet and a shield at some point in your life.
The armor of God. Ephesians chapter six. It says this.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to see. Stand your ground. And after you have done everything to stand, stand firm. Then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all of this, take up the shield of faith, which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, and pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert.
Be alert and always keep on praying for the saints. Amen.
Amen. You can grab a seat.
Firstly, Paul says, sorry. Finally, Paul says, so at the end. This is at the end of the letter. In other words, Paul is saying, in light of all the things that I've said in my letter to the Ephesians, in the first kind of five and a half chapters, in light of all of that which is, he goes through and he establishes our position in Christ. He says, in light of what God has done for you in the standing that you have as a child of God, as a citizen of heaven, in light of the fact that you are now filled by the Spirit, in light of all of that now standing and put on the armor. That's what he's saying. Side note, if you don't know all of this that I've just established, there's no point putting on the armor. The armor is pointless if the soldier is clueless.
Did you hear that? The armor is pointless if the soldier is clueless. If we don't understand our right standing in the Lord, in all that he has done for us, in that we are now children in his household, that we have the resources of heaven, that we are filled with the Holy Spirit, that we are never left, that we are empowered by Him.
If we don't understand all of that, then we can't fight the battle. But as we know all of that people of God, we then pick up the armor and we go to battle.
We need to be an army, not just a soldier.
Some of you may be thinking, well, then why do I need the armor if I know all of that great stuff? I think I'm called to peace.
I'm called to, you know, I'm called to just have a nice job and raise my family and bring peace to those around me and be a good person.
Let me tell you, you are called to more than that. You were made to conquer. You were made to be more than conquerors. You were made to take ground for the kingdom of God. Steve spoke on the Kingdom of Go last week.
We were created to be part of his plan and purpose for those around us to know Him. And so Paul says in verse 13, listen to this. When the day of evil comes, not if.
When the day of evil comes, when the attack is coming, when the darkness feels heavy, when there's ground to be taken, when there's souls to be saved, when there's people to be delivered and healed, when those things come against us, when we need a new building, when he's extending his kingdom in this city, we are to take up the sword of the Spirit and we're to do battle.
We get to see the victory.
And so what do we put on? We don't have time to go through this in detail. We could do a whole series on it. But we're to put on the belt of truth, first and foremost, those core biblical truths.
We are to know them and put them on as a belt so that our trousers don't fall down. The belt was literally meant to keep everything together, to hold it all together, not to let everything go.
But we hold on to the truth. We're to put on the breastplate of righteousness. You know, the breastplate protects all the vital organs. It protects us, but it's not our righteousness, it's not our right standing in the sense of, you know, I didn't mess up too much this week, and I came along to church and I've read my Bible and I've joined lots of teams, which, by the way, are all great things to do.
But that isn't our righteousness, our Right standing is in Jesus Christ because it's his blood that covers us and washes us clean and speaks in our defense.
We get to wear this breastplate of righteousness because of what he's done.
And so we're protected as we go against the schemes of the enemy. Your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, that we would always be ready to talk to people about the Prince of Peace, the shield of faith.
We're to pick up the shield of faith. As the fiery darts of the enemy seek to weaken us, they seek to bring doubt upon us. We're to pick up faith and say, no. My Bible says this is the word of God, the shield of faith. I trust in Yahweh, not in anything else.
The helmet of salvation. I love this. I love that it's a helmet that it protects our thoughts and our minds. What does? Our salvation.
We are saved and set free. And we put on this helmet, believing where we're going, believing that Jesus has saved us and set us free and that our residence is in heaven. That's where we're going. And it's this helmet of protection that comes across our minds and our thoughts when we. When we remember again our salvation.
And then finally the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. This is a powerful statement. You know, everything else that Paul's talked about in terms of armor has been on the defensive. It's been about protecting. Whereas when we pick up the sword of the spirit is the item that's used to kill, to end the enemy. Right.
To be on the attack.
We get to use the word of God to finish off the enemy's schemes in our lives.
You know, you don't pick up the sword in a real life battle just to look scary or to kind of finish the outfit off.
You pick up the sword because you mean business, because you want to end what the enemy is doing to you or to the person next to you.
Let me remind you. Yeah, this is key.
This isn't a person.
We're not killing a person.
You know, our battle is not against.
Just checking some of you are with me.
Our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers and principalities. Our battle is always against the enemy.
We always are ready to do battle with what the enemy seeks to steal, kill and destroy. And it says that we're more than conquerors. Just a couple of examples of this I wanted to share. Breakthrough and healing. So there's a young girl on our staff who is incredible, but she went through a Season, where she was praying for the sick on a Sunday, like we always do. And there was just a story, small seed of doubt, like, can God really do this? Is God really going to do this? God can do it, but is he really going to heal this morning? And she just went on a journey with the Lord where he said, I want you to read all of the miracles where I healed people. And so she Googled it, like, all the miracles, stories of Jesus, where he healed. And she spent months and months just going over these stories, remembering what Jesus did, learning the words of Jesus, you'd be healed.
See, pick up your mat. And there was this faith that rose up in her where she was like, yes, amen. Yes, we see these healings. This is the Lord. This is his will for us. This is his power. And then literally a few months later, recently, a very close family member of her got very sick.
Now, get this.
Now, she's not a spectator. Now. She's not someone who looks on and goes, can God do it?
Now she's someone who picks up the sword and goes, be healed. See, pick up your mat. By his stripes, we're healed. She speaks out the promises of God to her, to her family member, and she's seen incredible healing in that area. But she was prepared for battle. We're not to be unaware. We're to get ready and be prepared to use this word.
There's another story of a family in our church when.
When the mother was younger, she had four young children. And she remembers this day so clearly where she opened the cupboard and there was literally a can of beans for her family. And she, you know, she'd followed the Lord. She was. Felt like she'd been obedient to him, and things hadn't gone so well with the business, and they were really pressing into the presence of God.
But she was like, I can't feed my family. And so she went out to the field. There was a field behind her, behind her house. And she said, she shouted at the top of her lungs. And Psalm 37, 25, I was young and now I'm old. Yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging for bread. And so she went out and I can just imagine it. I know this lady. And she was like, you promised, Lord, that the righteous would never be the ones begging for bread. You said, yahweh, Jireh, that you would provide for me yesterday and today and forever. And she's shouting in the field behind her house. And she goes home, and within a couple of Hours. There's an envelope of money put through her door for dinner, for family dinner. You can clap when the Lord provides. Yeah. That is an incredible story.
Just the faithfulness of God when we, and I believe we're learning not just to read this book, but to put it in our mouths and to speak it out and to see the victories be won.
We're to do battle, people of God, not just because, you know, it's fun to take part, but because this is real. This is about souls being saved. This is about people encountering the Lord. This is the journey that we get to be on. And of course, Jesus does this in Matthew 4. We see it in the temptation of Jesus when the devil comes against him and he uses the word of God to make him flee.
To make him flee.
Whatever flying darts are coming against you, trust me, he has a sword for you in this book, in the word of God.
I want to get really practical just to finish. So how do we do this?
Firstly, I would say acknowledge him before you start reading the words on the page. Acknowledge that Holy Spirit is with you.
He's going to reveal Jesus to you.
And it's as simple as Lord, thank you that you're here.
Thank you that you read with me today. Then understand it. Make sure you understand the scripture in the right context. You know, the devil used scripture too, but it was completely out of context and he used it on purpose to deceive, try and deceive Jesus. But we're to know.
We're to know this word with clarity and then have authority in it. And there are places and spaces you can go. New life, coma, discipleship. I'm going to talk about in a minute. Know that you're reading this in the right context. Then read it out loud. Your voice is as unique as a fingerprint. You know how we all have a fingerprint that no one else has? Your voice is the same.
Could it be that the unique situation and breakthrough that you're on the edge of needs your unique voice to unlock it and to bring victory there?
You know, I often think about this in worship. I'm like, lord, you might be hearing the person on the left and the right and they might sound louder than me and better than me, but I know the Father is longing to hear my voice.
When I go to my kids play, I don't really care about anyone else's voice. I'm just listening out for my child's voice.
And the Father is listening out for your voice. The person on the left and the right, they can support you, they can build you up, they can pray with you. But he's looking for your voice. He's looking for you to speak up and to speak out and to believe him at his word and to see the victory be won.
Memorize scripture. Hopefully when you first pick up the sword, the first time you pick it up isn't for killing the enemy. Hopefully, you're already used to picking up the sword. You know the way it feels, you know the weight, you know the way, the way that it moves. You're familiar with it. And so we're to, in preparation, get familiar with his word, get familiar with the weapon so that when the battle comes, we're ready. We're ready and we're awake and we're alert.
And then the, the last practical thing, do it side by side. Don't do it on your own. Isn't it interesting in this Scripture that every part of their body, the body was covered except their back?
And I've always wondered why that was. But I think it's because we're meant to do this as an army. Paul doesn't speak about a soldier, he speaks about an army. Because actually, you know, the person in front of me and to the side of me and behind me, as we do this in communion there in community, they're watching my six.
They're watching for other schemes of the enemy coming against me. And we're doing it together. I would say unity isn't just a nice idea for the church. It's essential for victory.
And we're going after some things as a church, and we'll talk about those over the coming weeks. But we're to do this in community together as an army, taking up the sword of the Spirit and putting an end to the enemy schemes, taking ground, winning the victory, but doing it to together.
And I want to say to you, there's. I've mentioned a few places. What can you do from this talk to go away with. Maybe you're already in the word of God, but it's time to pick up the sword and start speaking it out with authority. Maybe you don't understand the Word as much or you want to intentionally start to be in His Word. Every day we're running a course called Chroma Discipleship. We started it in January. We've already had, I think roughly 100 people do the course.
And not only are you given kind of topics and material to work through every week, I think an example of that might come up. But not only are you given this material to go through every week, but you're also doing it alongside a mentor, a mentor in this church who we know, who we love, who we trust, who's going to cheer you on and get behind you and answer your questions and take you for coffee and, you know, go together on the journey. And so if you want to intentionally say yes to digging into his word to understand, understanding it, to encountering him, to being transformed by it and conquering some land through it, then I want to invite you to sign up for this coma discipleship course. There's a flyer also on your chairs. It looks like this. You can grab it, take it home, pray about it. But you can sign up to that. If you've not done new life, do new life. There's tons of ways to get into the word of God together.
We do this as community.
It is time, people of God, to pick up the sword of the Spirit, to not just read it, to not do it on our own, but to speak it out and to see the victories be won.
We were made to be more than conquerors, and I would like to suggest to you that the life of comfort is just boring.
We get to conquer land. We get to see lives transformed. We get to see the sick healed, we get to see people saved. We get to see the extension of his kingdom as we believe him at his word, as we encounter him, as we're transformed by him, and as we take ground with Him. Are you with me?
Half of you. Are you with me?
Amazing. Why don't you stand? I'm done.
