[00:00:38] So we are in Matthew, chapter 28 today. If you've got your Bibles, your iPads, your phones, that's where we're looking. Matthew 28, Matthew is the first of the Gospels, but actually the second Gospel to be written. The first gospel to be written was Mark.
[00:00:58] Mark was very much in Peter's shadow. He was Peter's disciple, really doing a lot of work with Peter. So Mark is very much Peter's story. And typical Peter is kind of all over the place. It's a very active gospel. Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, all the way through. But Matthew, on the other hand, is very organized.
[00:01:16] Super, super.
[00:01:18] This happened and this happened, and this happened right through the gospel. Not surprising. He was a tax collector. He knew how to manage the money, the details, the pennies, and therefore he knows how to write as well. And so when the early church fathers got together and put together the New Testament in the order it is, it was good that Matthew came first. And in fact, he starts with a load of genealogies, which for us may sound really boring, you know, and so and so begat, so and so begat and all the rest of it. But what he was doing was really important because Matthew's Gospel is a bridge from the Old Testament to the New.
[00:01:56] It's actually saying to the Jews, to the new believers, this Jesus is who the Old Testament says he is.
[00:02:09] This is your Messiah, this is your king.
[00:02:12] And therefore, when Matthew is giving that list right at the beginning, it's so important because he's tying through all the prophetic words of the Old Testament about Jesus coming into being in this baby. Isn't that beautiful? That's why Matthew is the first of the Gospels.
[00:02:32] Matthew 28:1. Let's stand as we read God's word together.
[00:02:36] This is an incredible moment. Jesus is risen from the dead.
[00:02:40] Life is changed for eternity. At this moment, nothing will be the same again.
[00:02:46] Now, after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
[00:02:55] And behold, there was a great earthquake. For an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
[00:03:04] His appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow.
[00:03:08] And for fear of him, the guards trembled and became like dead men.
[00:03:12] But the angel said to the women, do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus. Who is crucified? He is not here, for he has risen.
[00:03:23] Hallelujah. That's good.
[00:03:25] Come see the place where he lay.
[00:03:29] Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead. And behold, he is going before you to Galilee, and there you will see him. See? I have told you. So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, greetings. And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. And Jesus said to them, do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee and. And there they will see me down to verse 16.
[00:04:01] Now, the 11 disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him, they worshiped him. But some doubted, and Jesus came and said to them, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I've commanded you. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

[00:04:36] So I have a confession.
[00:04:41] It's church.
[00:04:42] Confessions should be okay in church. I think my confession is this.
[00:04:49] I'm an introvert.
[00:04:52] I'm an introvert.
[00:04:54] If you had the classic psychometric questions, you've probably heard these before. You know, you get these questionnaires. If you had a choice right now between going out with your friends to a party or sitting in a corner with a book, which would you choose?
[00:05:14] Sitting in a corner with a book. Every time. That's me.
[00:05:18] I'm a bit of an. I've got them.
[00:05:21] I have a T shirt. I don't know if the cameras can zoom in. This is my favorite T shirt. This is what it says.
[00:05:27] Books Helping Introverts avoid conversations since 1454.
[00:05:36] Ha.
[00:05:38] What's the magic of 1454? Anybody know?
[00:05:42] Printing press is about 1440. So it's just after that.
[00:05:47] It was the first book to be printed. Kind of like a book, you know, like this. It was the first one to be printed. Do you know what the first one to be printed was?
[00:05:56] Have a guess.
[00:05:57] It was the Bible.
[00:05:59] It was the Bible.
[00:06:00] I love that. The very first book to be printed was the Bible. This is the time of Martin Luther as well, and the Reformation. So Martin Luther was telling everybody that there's no use you giving money to the Pope. It's not going to buy you into heaven. It's only by salvation. In Jesus Christ.
[00:06:17] That's what he was declaring. Sola scriptura, sola fidei. Only scripture, only faith.
[00:06:23] And the wonderful thing about Martin Luther's teaching at this time was we had a printing press. So within months, this teaching was around Europe and the whole of the Protestant movement had started because of a glorious intervention from a printing press. I love that. I love these kind of stories. So, yes, I'm an introvert.
[00:06:44] I would choose to sit in a corner with a book rather than go to a party. If it was a party with £100, nah, I think I'd still sit in the corner to party with £1,000.
[00:06:57] And Tim Wilson was making his amazing magical chocolate brownies. Then I'm there, I'm there.
[00:07:05] If you haven't tasted Tim's chocolate brownies, get yourself an invitation.
[00:07:14] If you don't get an invitation, I'd encourage you just to sit on the doormat until they let you in. They are amazing. So, yeah, I'm an introvert. Years ago by background, I'm a businessman. I worked in the City of London maybe for about 40 years or so, in the pensions industry. About 20, 25 years ago, I was in Australia on business with a fellow Christian, Tony.
[00:07:36] We both worked in the pension industry, we're both Christians, and that's really where any similarities end. Tony was a crazy extrovert. Still is. He leads City Vision today.
[00:07:47] I mean, really crazy extrovert. And as you've learned, I'm not.
[00:07:52] And I remember to this day, we were in the airport, Sydney airport, and we just bought ourselves a coffee. And as we're going away with the coffee, Tony turns to the girl who just served us and said, this guy has got the most amazing story that will change your life. And he walks off.
[00:08:09] And I'm honestly rabbit in the headlights, I didn't know what to do. But anyway, Tony was very good in helping me get out of my introversion, actually. So much so he challenged me on something in particular. He said to me, what is your life statement?
[00:08:25] What is your life statement?
[00:08:27] And by that he meant he'd written a statement about his Christian life, just in a couple of sentences. And it really got me thinking. I thought I could really do with just working out what my particular call is, what is my life statement? So all through that time in Australia, back on the plane, few weeks after, I was kind of working it out and I got there, I have a life statement today. It's actually pinned right above my computer. I see it every morning and I'm going to read it to you, it says this. To love God and his created people, to live a life of disciplined grace, maintaining a focused, young and can do attitude. That's my life statement.
[00:09:07] To love God and his created people, to live a life of disciplined grace, maintaining a focused, young and can do attitude. Let me start with the end first. That's the easy bit. Maintaining a focused, young and can do attitude. I never want to be the old man in the congregation saying, it was never like that in my day.
[00:09:28] I do not want to be that man. I do not want to be somebody growing old and growing critical. I want as an older person now to be encouraging the next generation. Go for it. Run the race.
[00:09:41] Do all that God has called you to do. Listen to God. Obey what he says. Hear the Holy Spirit. Allow that anointing to change your life. I'm gonna be encouraging you every step of the way. Go beyond where I am. Go way beyond where I am. Go for all that God has got for you. That is the cry of my heart. I always want to be like that.
[00:10:02] I never want to be critical.
[00:10:06] And guys, if you're of a similar age to me, can I encourage you to be the same?
[00:10:11] The younger generation will not do it the way we did.
[00:10:15] They may not even do it the way we like.
[00:10:18] I want to encourage them. I try to. I send them texts. I send them WhatsApp, but they really read text and WhatsApp and email. You may as well give up now.
[00:10:28] So I don't know quite how to encourage them sometimes. But let's encourage these guys on the journey they are on. Nicky Gumbel, the guy who introduced the Alpha course to this country, tells the story. He was once going to preach at a church in London. He'd not been there before, so he got there early just to make sure he could find the place. And he was so early that. That only the caretaker was there, and the caretaker was in his 80s.
[00:10:53] And Nicky says to him, gosh, you must have seen some changes in your lifetime.
[00:10:58] And the guy says, yes, I have. And I've resisted every one of them.
[00:11:02] Let's not be like that. So I have, by God's grace, a focused, young and can do attitude. The middle bit of my particular statement is to live a life of disciplined grace. Living a life of disciplined grace. Those of you who are of a theological background, I have a reformed theology. I believe it's God who saves. I believe it's God's salvation. It's God that is sovereign. I believe even though I may have prayed a prayer, he by his Holy Spirit had to reach to me for me to be able to pray that prayer. According to Ephesians, I was in a coffin. I was dead in my sin, and God lifted me up. That's my theology. So it's a grace theology. It's all grace. It's all grace. It's entirely to do with God. So if I wanted to, I could sit back and still get to heaven.
[00:11:44] But no, for me, it has to be disciplined grace.
[00:11:49] It has to be disciplined grace. Because of what he's done, I want to be at church because of what he's done. I want to read the Word because of what he's done, I want to pray. I want to share my faith. Do you get that? Does that make sense?
[00:12:04] Say, yes, Ralph.
[00:12:07] It's because of his grace that we choose to live a life of discipline and grace.
[00:12:13] And the first bit of my statement, I suppose that's the fun bit, really, to love God and his created people. I put the word created in because I'm an introvert. And if I don't remind myself that you're created by God, I might not talk to you.
[00:12:28] So it's important that that is there for me.
[00:12:35] I mean, I do have to talk to people. I have a family.
[00:12:42] It's necessary sometimes to talk to them. I have a wife.
[00:12:47] We've been married for 48 years.
[00:12:54] And I don't know, maybe it's because I haven't communicated that we're married for 48 years. But anyway, of course I have to communicate. And actually, Tony really helped me with that whole thing of just getting out of my introversion.
[00:13:07] And God did the rest. God, the Holy Spirit has done the rest over the years. I mean, I was super shy.
[00:13:12] I was the kid in the classroom who would never put his hand up in case somebody picked on me.
[00:13:17] That was me. Super, super shy. But God, the Holy Spirit has done a job on me over the years. I've been a Christian 56 years now.
[00:13:26] I became a lead singer in a Christian rock group. Would you believe there are no photos?
[00:13:33] I then did the singer songwriting thing. A gospel circuit in London for a few years. I led a church. I get to preach. That is the Holy Spirit.
[00:13:41] That is God's work. I could not do that.
[00:13:44] If you knew me, I could not do that. But God, the Holy Spirit has done a work in me. And so God, the Holy Spirit can do a work in you.
[00:13:54] Every one of us here has that same call to go to the lost, to share our faith.
[00:14:04] It is the Great Commission, as someone said. It's the great commission to, not the great suggestion. And when Jesus is standing on that mountain and saying those words to his disciples, it's not just his disciples that are there. This is something that's been planned. This is something that's been planned for a while.
[00:14:23] So you've got the angel saying to Mary and Mary, behold, he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him. Then Jesus says to them, don't be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee. You get the message, there's a planned meeting.
[00:14:35] This is not just a short instant. This is not just Jesus turning up in a room and saying, go to the world, which he did to his disciples in Jerusalem. This is Jesus planning to gather people on a mountain.
[00:14:48] It takes about four to seven days to walk from Jerusalem to the Sea of Galilee, depending how fast you're going. So this was planned at a date in advance, right? Do you get me? Do you understand? This is Jesus planning an event.
[00:15:01] This is a future event where he's gathering his people together. The Christians, by that time, they know Jesus has been raised from the dead. The gossip is out there. Who's going to want to see Jesus resurrected? Everybody, right? So everybody's planning to be on this mountain.
[00:15:17] This is a special gathering. Theologians say it's likely that this is where the 500 gathered that Paul talks about actually happened.
[00:15:28] Let me read you that passage. It's in 1 Corinthians 15. Paul says this. For I delivered you as of first importance what I also received.
[00:15:38] That Christ died for our sins in accordance with Scripture, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with Scripture, that he appeared to Peter and then to the 12. Then he appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive.
[00:15:54] This is that when Paul is talking about 500 gathered together. Theologians reckon it's more than likely what Matthew is recording at the end of his Gospel. A gathering of people on a mountain. And of course, Paul says it's 500 men. So at Women and Children. We're over 1,000 people here gathered on a mountain. That mountain was probably Mount Arbel. Mount Arbel looks right over the Sea of Galilee. And from the top of that mountain, you. You can see Capernaum, you can see Bethsaida, you can see Gennesaret. You can see the places where Jesus did his miracles.
[00:16:28] You can see the places where Jesus healed, where the blind man saw, where the man with leprosy was healed.
[00:16:35] If you turn the other way on the mountain, look the other way you'll see Nazareth and Cana, where Jesus grew up and where he did his first miracle. This is very deliberate, guys. Jesus is calling his people together very deliberately in a place where you can see all that he has done.
[00:16:53] And so as they see what has transpired over the last three years, there's a rise of faith in them to what they are now called to do, to go into the world and preach the Gospel.

[00:17:14] Paul says in Ephesians that we are seated in heavenly places.
[00:17:23] We are seated in heavenly places. We look down effectively, we look down on Satan, we look down on the issues, on the problems. We can see all the issues that we face because we stand in heavenly places. We walk through a door marked paid in full into heavenly places and we can stand and declare to what needs to change.
[00:17:50] And that's what the disciples were doing on that day. They were receiving from Jesus a literal picture of his ministry that enables them to go out and to serve. And Jesus is saying, this is me.
[00:18:03] Now it's you. This is me.
[00:18:06] Now it's you. They would all have been there that day. Peter would have been there later to die in Rome upside down on a cross. Thomas was there on that day.
[00:18:14] He later traveled to India and was martyred for his faith. Philip the evangelist traveled widely throughout the Far east, eventually suffering a martyr's death in Turkey. Nathanael and Thaddeus went to modern day Armenia and were killed there. James, the son of Alphaeus, went right through the Persian Empire and was crucified there for his faith. Matthew, who's writing these words, would eventually die for his faith. In fact, all of those early disciples died apart from John.
[00:18:42] You're looking worried. By God's grace, we will not die a martyr's death.
[00:18:48] By God's grace, we will not die a martyr's death. But may we have that spirit within us to go into the world and to do all we can to see Jesus Christ glorified. Jim Elliot, the missionary said, he is no fool who gives or what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.
[00:19:11] He's no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. He wrote that in his diary. About a year later, he was killed by the Orca Indians in South America.
[00:19:22] He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. But it wasn't just the disciples there that day on the mountain. Mark would have been there, young Mark would have been there, writing away what became his gospel. Martha And Mary, of course, would have been there. The two Marys who were at the tomb, Joanna from Herod's household, Mary Magdalene, the man who was healed of leprosy. I'm sure he was there. The blind man, no longer blind. I'm sure he was there. Maybe Lazarus was there, raised from the dead. Do you get the picture? There's a gathering of people here. That is a big gathering. They have been called together for a moment. They have been called together for a purpose. And that purpose is to hear from Jesus himself. The words go into all the world, guys. We are gathered in heavenly places before the throne room of God with a picture of what Jesus has done on the cross. And the call to us is to go into the world and preach the gospel.
[00:20:21] Will we do it?
[00:20:23] Will we do it?
[00:20:29] You see, they did.
[00:20:31] Christianity began that day in Judea. It went to Samaria. It went to the ends of the earth. I mean, in A.D. 25, nobody outside of a small town in Galilee had ever heard of Jesus.
[00:20:44] By A.D. 50, there were riots in Rome because of him.
[00:20:48] By A.D. 65, his followers were being persecuted by the Emperor himself.
[00:20:54] Such was their success.
[00:20:56] By the early 3002, the main religion of the Roman world was Christianity. They did it. This hotch potch of people standing on a mountain, looking down at where Jesus administered, received that call and obeyed. So that mountain is important. And that vision of us being seated in heavenly places is important. It's that that enables us to see clearly why we are doing what we're doing.
[00:21:24] We see what Jesus has done, and now it's our turn.
[00:21:27] We see, and now it's our turn. We had Dylan Long with us last week and he talked about those guys dreaming bigger than themselves. I like that phrase, dreaming bigger than themselves. And that's what we're called to do. That's what we're called to do, to dream bigger than ourselves. If you've not heard Dylan's talk, it's gold dust.
[00:21:49] I encourage you to go listen to it.

[00:21:55] That would be rude.
[00:21:57] But that is what we are called to do as a church. Just as those early disciples responded, so the call today is to us in Leicester. In this multicultural city of Leicester, in this city that is blessed by the Holy Spirit, in this city where many people from many faiths are finding a faith in Jesus Christ. It's our turn.
[00:22:18] It's our turn. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9, to the weak I became weak that I might win the weak, I have become all things to all people that I Might by all means save some.
[00:22:30] Shall we save some?
[00:22:31] What do you think?
[00:22:34] Translation, Modern translation Of that passage, 1 Corinthians 9:22 says, I do everything I can to win everyone I possibly can.
[00:22:44] I do everything I can to win everyone I possibly can. Should we do that? Should we try and win everyone we possibly can? Now remember, I'm an introvert. So how did I do this? Well, for the most part, in business, I wore a cross on my suit and that got me a lot of conversations. I know not all of you at work are allowed to wear crosses, but that got me a lot of conversations, a lot of inroads, really, in just being able to.
[00:23:10] To share my faith.
[00:23:12] It changed the vibes of meetings and I'm grateful for that. Just across did all of that.
[00:23:19] And one of the reasons that I was able to do that and in the workplace, share my faith was actually the primary call was not to share my faith. My primary call is to worship God.
[00:23:31] Our primary call is to worship God. There's something called the Westminster Shorter Catechism of 1647. You may not have heard of that, but it was written by the Puritans who were followers of Martin Luther 100 years on in this country. But you may have heard this statement.
[00:23:47] Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
[00:23:52] Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. You heard that before. It's quite a well known passage. It's not in scripture, but it's absolutely scriptural. So. My chief end is not to preach the Gospel. What?
[00:24:04] My chief end is not to attend church. What are you saying, Ralph? My chief end is not to read the Bible. Is this heresy?
[00:24:11] No. My chief end is to glorify him. My chief end is to worship Jesus.
[00:24:17] To worship Him. And as I do that, I want to do all the other things because of the love that he has for me that I am experiencing at that moment.
[00:24:29] So I want to share my faith because I'm worshiping Him. I want to be in church because I'm worshiping Him. I want to read the Bible because I'm worshiping Him. I want to pray because I'm worshiping Him.
[00:24:42] Our chief end is to glorify Him. Everything else follows.
[00:24:47] It's John Piper, the theologian, who said, God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. If I'm satisfied in God, if I'm enjoying God in worship, everything else flows, everything else follows from that.
[00:25:03] So when I get to Monday morning, it's not like I have to preach, but I can actually just share my faith in easy ways, because it's God that saves, not me. And my primary reason for being there is to glorify Him. So I glorify him and I get promotions. I glorify him and I get blessing. I glorify him and people start asking me, what is it about my faith?
[00:25:30] We moved from London to Crawley some years ago, early on in our family life, because we wanted to help set up a church there. We were planting, it's a fairly new church, we were going to help out and I wrote to the only pensions company I knew in Crawley to see if they'd give me a job. And I got a very interesting letter back. It said, we have no vacancies, but come for an interview.
[00:25:53] So that's a rather novel one, isn't it? I went for an interview and I found out that Mr. P, the guy who led that department, the pensions department of EMI Music as it was, was looking for an assistant manager.
[00:26:07] And that was me. And that was a massive promotion. I wasn't looking for promotion, but that's what God did. We got there and very soon after, Mr. P comes up to me. He'd been observing me. He knew about my Christian faith because he knew that's why I'd come to Crawley, right? And he said, can my wife and I and our children come to your church on Sunday?
[00:26:27] My introvert reaction was that.
[00:26:30] But I got over it and I said, yes, come. And they came.
[00:26:35] And within a year, he died of a heart attack.
[00:26:39] Can I ask you, who is your One?
[00:26:42] Who is the one that God has called you to speak to before it's too late? Who is the one before it's too late? I'm part of a table tennis club where I live.
[00:26:52] I'm possibly the youngest or one of the youngest, so most of my friends there are nearer the exit door than me. And I'm deliberately there just being able to share the faith that they would come to know Jesus, who is your one?
[00:27:04] You see, Jesus saved one by one. Even on that mountain, they were looking down at what Jesus had done. It was the blind man, it was the leper, it was the woman who had been caught in adultery. It was all of these individual situations that Jesus had led through to a faith in him. Who is your one?
[00:27:22] Who are you going to talk to?
[00:27:24] Who are you going to share your faith with?
[00:27:28] My job grew. I got into international pensions, so I needed somebody in America and we hired a young Brit girl out there. Living in New York and she came over to our country and Ro and I took her to our house for a meal and led her to Christ.
[00:27:47] Who is you are.
[00:27:48] I parked my car near a solicitor's office and one day a girl came out of the solicitor's office and knocked on my car window and said, I've seen the sticker in the back of your car about Jesus, can I come to church?
[00:27:58] She came and she got saved.
[00:28:01] Who was your one?
[00:28:06] When we moved on from Crawley, we moved to the Midlands, Peterborough, now Leicester really, with a call to come back to our roots, to where we were. And again God opened an amazing opportunity and gave me incredible promotion, a job.
[00:28:23] I just wanted to be there for the church, but God kept blessing me in my business and this time I had a whole department to look after. So I didn't feel that I could preach the gospel too much, but I wanted to live it. So I still have the cross, still sharing my faith when I could. And my pa, my secretary was Jan, and I noticed that she just kept observing me and I knew something was going on until the day came when she came and said, you know that Alpha course you talked about, would it be all right if I came?
[00:28:51] And Ro and I had the following Sunday the privilege of standing with her at the front of the church meeting as she gave her life to Jesus Christ.
[00:29:00] Whose you want?
[00:29:04] Who is it? God is asking you to speak too.
[00:29:09] See, I'm aware of the stories I've told. It may sound big headed, it may sound, hey, look at this guy, getting people safe.
[00:29:17] But I'm an introvert.
[00:29:19] I'm an introvert. If God can do this with a kid who sat on the back row of school afraid to put his hand up, what can he do with you?
[00:29:29] If God can do this with somebody who wants to sit in the corner reading a book, what can God do with you? This is our time to declare all that God has invited us to declare to go to the world.
[00:29:43] This is Lester's time.
[00:29:45] We are in a time of revival. We are in increasing time of God, the Holy Spirit, working in our city. Who is your one?
[00:29:55] Who is it that God is prompting you to speak to? Is it a friend?
[00:30:01] Have you had a conversation before? And maybe you just left off, Is it a neighbor?
[00:30:05] Is it that guy walking the dog?
[00:30:08] Is it that shop assistant?
[00:30:11] Is it somebody in your family?
[00:30:13] Who is it that God is prompting you to speak to? It's time.
[00:30:17] We stand in heavenly places looking down on all that God has done and his call, his great commission to us is to go to the world. And now it's our time.
[00:30:28] Now it's our time. Who's the one?
[00:30:31] Who is it that God is calling you to speak to? Don't leave it too late.
[00:30:37] I do everything I can to win everyone I possibly can. Is it your neighbour? Is it your workmate? Is it family? Is it friends?
[00:30:45] We live in days of revival and my prayer is this morning. It's ever so practical, this preach.
[00:30:52] Because the question is this, who is the one? Who are you going to speak to this week?
[00:30:58] That's the challenge.

[00:31:03] You've got to be less than an introvert than me, right?
[00:31:06] We can do this.
